Protected Geographical Indication is a process of giving certificate to original product from specific geographical area which has special characteristic that differentiate it with another product from different region. Based on PP No 51 2007, Geographical Indication is a sign showing the origin of a product. There are some factors affecting specific characteristic of product, such as environment factor or natural condition, Human factor, and can be the combination of both factors.

The Responsibility of giving Geographical Indication belongs to General Directorate of Intellectual Property under Ministry of Human Right. Beside that there are Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Trade which are related to this certification. The Certificate is in the form of written legal letter and logo for product packaging.

Coconut Sugar from Kulon Progo has special taste and aroma. Its physical appearances are yellowish brown in color, smooth texture, high melting point, and different aroma and also sweetness if is it compare with another coconut sugar (MPIG GKKP, 2013). Those specific characteristic was influenced by Geographical and historical factors of Kulon Progo Region.

There are various coconut products in the market, PGI will give guarantee to consumer about quality and originality of Coconut Sugar from Kulon Progo so consumer can detect the product easily. Based on the research conducted by Indonesian Researcher shows that product origin becomes one of factor affecting consumer decision to buy the product.

The aim of this certification is to protect Indonesia Product so there will be no claim from other country because it can be proofed geographically trough product characteristic. From the point of consumer view it will give guarantee that there is no imitation product in the market.
